Hands-On Humanities Day will be taking place at the John Hansard Gallery, City Eye, Nuffield Southampton Theatres City (SO14 7DU) and Solent University Sir James Matthews (SO14 7NN), at the heart of the Southampton Cultural Quarter, in Above Bar Street.

We aim to make Humanities Late and Hands-on Humanities Day an enjoyable experience accessible to everyone.

Our Festival team and Student Ambassadors on site will try their best to assist you during your visit.

There will be welcome desks located at the entrance of every venue if you have any queries upon arrival.


Parking

City centre car-parks near to the Festival venues include a limited number of bays for Blue Badge holders. The closest ones are located in Park Walk, just behind NST City.

/ Buggy parks/coin lockers

Buggy parks are available as follows:

  • John Hansard Gallery and City Eye: Ground floor, behind the stairwell
  • Nuffield Southampton Theatres City: Ground floor, next to the lifts

Please note: the buggy parks will not be guarded, so please don’t leave valuables unattended in your buggy.

In the John Hansard Gallery, coin lockers for small items are available on a ‘first come first served’ basis. The lockers require a £1 coin so please make sure to bring some change with you.


Quiet Rooms

Quiet Rooms (for some peace and privacy) are located as follows:

  • John Hansard Gallery and City Eye: 1st floor, City Eye Sofa Hub
  • Nuffield Southampton Theatres City: 2nd floor, Art Space 2
  • Solent University Sir James Matthews building: although a specific room is not designated, the main corridor will be relatively quiet as well as some areas of The Artisan Café

Baby Changing Rooms

Baby changing facilities are available as follows:

  • John Hansard Gallery and City Eye: Ground floor
  • Nuffield Southampton Theatres City: 1st floor

Breastfeeding

These events are breastfeeding-friendly, please feel free to breastfeed wherever is comfortable and convenient for you and your baby.

During Hands-on Humanities Day and Humanities Late, Quiet Rooms (detailed above) will be available with sofas and bean bags.


Sensory overload

The Humanities Late and Hands-on Humanities Day programme includes some activities with loud noises, flashing lights and darkened spaces. Please check the individual activity information on our website to inform your choice of activity.

Please note that Quiet Rooms (as detailed above) are available on both days. Please ask a member of the Festival Team for directions to the nearest one if needed.


Evacuation routes for wheelchair users

Please be aware that both the John Hansard Gallery and Nuffield Southampton Theatre City do not use elevators in case of building evacuation.

eVac chairs will be used by trained staff at the venue to evacuate wheelchair users from the upper floors. In case of emergency, please let the staff know how you feel about leaving your wheelchair behind to exit the building on an eVac chair.

John Hansard Gallery and Nuffield Southampton Theatre City also have a designated Refuge Bay at each floor above ground. In case of emergency, please follow the instructions from staff.
